Success in life is different for everyone. A wise man once defined success as the continued expansion of happiness and the progressive realization of worthy goals. Bear in mind that a successful life is not all about pursuing success. Success in life also means developing the ability to be grateful and to find the nuggets of beauty in less glamorous times.
Now that most of the world is sheltering to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, you probably have a little more time on your hands to think. It’s hard to tell what the new “normal” after the pandemic will look like, yet it’s the perfect time to prepare. You could choose to orient your life around what you “should” be doing to be successful, or choose to embrace your core and live your life according to your wants and needs.
Your thoughts affect your self-esteem, your peace and joy, your success or failure, and your impact on the life of others. We all have the opportunity to change our lives by changing our thoughts. Still not convinced? Imagine biting into a lemon … are you salivating? Your thoughts had the power to do this! Amazing, right?
Here’s how to position yourself for future success:
- Revisit and re-evaluate goals. Have a vision supported by an intention. Define what you want for your life and support that vision with intention. Be driven by what excites you most, not by what others expect of you. Let go of the need for validation from others. Don’t overlook goals that will support a happier life.
- Shake up stagnant thinking by finding new sources of stimulation. Be open to new ways of doing things, even in your area of expertise. Allow yourself to fail in the process of learning and growing.
- Approve of yourself. Your limitations may just be in your mind.
- See the good. Assume that others mean well.
- Get your needs met. We’re often unwilling to ask what we need. Ask for help.
- Take smart risks. Research potential outcomes and determine what your chances of success are. Evaluate whether the payoff is worth risking the harm that could be done.
- Clear up unresolved matters. Address issues from your past with yourself or others that are holding you back.
- Choose happiness. Being happy is not about circumstances, it’s a decision.
- View life as a journey. Look forward to new and unfamiliar experiences.
Success traditionally has been defined in terms of money and power. However, the paradox of success is by focusing on fulfilment (and not success) you become successful.
Take the time to invest in an extraordinary life by knowing what is important and valuable to you.
