A new study from Northern Ireland found that people who report housework as part of their routine tend to be heavier than those who get their exercise through traditional means. In fact, according to this study, the more some people said they spent performing housework as exercise, the heavier they tended to be!
Say what now?! Surely, the more physical activity – no matter what the form – the fitter you’ll be and the more calories you’ll burn, right? If you’ve been keeping it sparkling and still not getting the six-pack abs, read on.
Exercise is usually structured and follows certain scientific principles. So, according to your exercise, you will achieve results, whether it is weight loss, toning, or getting rid of lifestyle diseases.
Nutritionists explain that one of the important principles of exercise is progressive overload. This is when you follow the same exercise routine for 3 to 4 weeks. And after some time - as you get fitter -you increase the sets, repetitions, or the intensity of the exercise.
In simple words, it means that you are progressing gradually to get stronger each week. This progress is not possible when you are just sticking to household chores. Sure, they can act as a great activity to your schedule, but it’s not enough and cannot replace a workout. Also, since you’re at home and the fridge is right there, well … it often doesn’t make up for the extra calories you take in while munching in the process.
We all feel the pressure to be a little fitter and a bit more in shape, so it’s important to get your heart pumping by doing regular 30 minute exercises 3 to 5 times per week.
Although household chores can’t replace regular exercise, it can get your heart rate up, tighten your muscles, and burn a significant amount of calories. You might be wondering just how many calories you can burn by tackling your household chores? Turns out the amount varies depending on your weight, metabolism, age, and sex, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Did you know that mopping and sweeping can burn up to 710kj an hour? We’re talking more or less 11kj per every 5 minutes just to make your bed! Amazing right?
So, crank up the tunes and boost your fitness by making the most of your household chores. Add to your calorie burn by stepping up the pace; a few extra trips up and down the stepladder when cleaning your windows and stepping into full lunges each time you vacuum or mop, all add up. Also, doing a few squats while doing some yard work couldn’t hurt.
Bottom line: Should you swap your treadmill for a broom? Not quite.
Keep moving and stay fit by combining exercise and household chores.
